Potty Training

It’s no secret that I hate potty training.  In fact, I would say that it is one of the two absolute worst things about parenting young children.  I really, really hate it.  I know people whose kids just do it on their own.  I guess it wouldn’t be so bad if that were the case around here, but as it stands, I hate it.  I made a promise that I would never potty train Ashton.  He would have to figure it out on his own because I really don’t want to go through that hell again.  And now here I am with an almost-3-year-old who is ready to be potty trained (I think).  A few days ago I noticed that his diaper was dry when I was getting him ready for bed.  I told him that maybe he should just sit on the potty and go pee so it wouldn’t be in his diaper.  He did!  And then he did it again the next day, and the next!  For the past few days, he has peed in the potty every day.  But I’m still very aware of the fact that he cannot be pushed.  Two nights ago I asked him to sit on the potty and go pee and this was his response, “No pee.  No poop,” over and over again.  I asked him if he wanted any of the rewards he has been promised and his response again was, “No lollypop, no movies, no Lightning McQueen computer, no sit on the potty.  No pee.  No poop.”  All right, kid.  Have it your way.  But today he wanted to wear his new Nemo underwear.  He wore it most of the day and just as I was finishing up my dinner and he was standing beside me, he tells me he’s peeing in his underwear.  Of course.  And when Taylor took it off, it was discovered that it was more than just pee.  Lovely.  Have I mentioned that I hate potty training?

I am soooooo with you. Hate, hate, hate it! I think I mentioned in a blog post how Iyov just picked it up as easy as pie. Well he did! And then when life got crazy and we were moving, he was peeing and pooping all over the place and I said “screw this. I’d rather have him in diapers.” So his underwear were decommissioned. So for months he was back in diapers because I figured if he wasn’t interested in picking it up again, neither was I. Three months passed and I thought I had my courage up enough to see if he’d go back to it and he did! But seriously, I really hate it. It’s really overrated to try before they are 2.5 because they can’t pull up and down their own pants/underwear. So yeah. Potty training sucks but feeding children also sucks, especially for those of us who have kids that only eat 5 total things on the planet willingly. Yeah potty training and eating, the bane of my existence.

Oliver just decided today that the toilet is not evil, the little potty is not going to eat him if he sits on it, and that maybe Mommy, Daddy, and James have some sort of knowledge about the world that HE doesn’t. But I’m still on your side. I hate HATE potty training. That may be why J didn’t get it done until he was 4. But hey, I don’t know a SINGLE kindergartener who still wears a diaper.

I get that “no poop” problem once in a while too. haha…. sometime I crack myself up.

I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t allow your child in kindergarten if they were still in diapers. And Dad you’re barely potty trained right now!

  6. Steve says:

No… I just like saying the word “POOP”. Oh by the way, as of today, I can pee like a big boy now…

Yikes. Haven’t started; don’t want to go there. I’m waiting until the magic 2.5 years mark in May anyway. Until then, life is easy…

Good luck with Ashton. I unfortunately have no helpful ideas for you.
