That Mom

Have you ever been to the store and seen the mom with the two kids who she can’t seem to keep under control?  The baby (maybe about 18 months) is tired and doesn’t want to be there.  He starts screaming; high pitched, ear piercing screams.  Nobody really knows why he’s doing it, but you can guess that it probably happens frequently at home as well.  His older sister (maybe about 5) is, for some reason, carrying a towel with which she decides to hit her younger brother every time he screams.  The younger brother is more than just screaming now, he’s crying and throwing a fit.  It’s nap time and he’s overly tired.  The only reason he isn’t lying down on the floor and kicking as well, is because he’s trapped in the cart.  The mother threatens to take the towel away if the girl hits her younger brother again.  Not three seconds later, it happens again and the mother takes the towel away from the big sister.  Now the sister starts to scream and cry and throw a fit.  The poor mother now has two screaming children, both of which she can do nothing about.  She could, I suppose, leave the store and come back another time, but it looks as though she has found everything she needs and is now just waiting for her number to be called so her fabric can be cut and she can go wait in another line to buy her goods.  Eventually the mother is so fed up with the whole situation that she yells at her kids, “YOU’RE CREATING A SCENE!!!”  Finally the mother finishes what she came in for, and the screaming children leave the store, amidst cheers from everybody else who was there.  We’ve all seen this situation.  I was lucky enough to be that mother today (except I didn’t yell at my kids and there weren’t any audible cheers as we left the store).  Note to self: next time you need to go to the fabric store, make sure you leave the kids home.  At least nobody told me I need to call Super Nanny.  Remember that?

I am THAT mom more than I’d like to be. I’m not sure if it’s the age or the move, but taking them out in public has been a challenge lately!
