Texting

I just don’t get it.  Is it really necessary?  Is anything really that important that you have to TEXT???  I’ve heard all of the arguments.  I know what you’ll all say, but why not just pick up the phone and call the person?  It takes less time.  It’s more personal.  If they don’t answer, it’s probably because they are either busy or don’t want to talk to you.  Leave a message.  They’ll get back to you on their time.  Remember 10 years ago when very few people had cell phones and we were all just fine?  Sure, sometimes we couldn’t get ahold of people all the time, but we lived through it.  Taylor’s all about not having cell phones at all.  I’m not willing to go that far because they’re really useful, especially in an emergency, but I use mine for a phone, not a personal texting machine.  I understand that texting can be useful at times, but usually when people are holding text conversations, it’s because they are in a place where it is inappropriate to be calling somebody.  FYI, that probably means that it’s inappropriate to be texting.  And don’t get me started on the whole texting while driving thing.  That’s just dumb.

Now that we’ve established how dumb texting is, I also don’t get why every person on the planet expects that every other person who has a cell phone (or a home phone for that matter) has a texting plan.  I, for one, don’t.  As stated above, I think texting is dumb and I don’t do it, so why would I pay an extra $20/month to get texts from people that I don’t want to get in the first place?  I don’t ever text back.  It takes WAY too long.  I know with practice I could get faster, but I don’t want to.  Remember?  It’s dumb.  It’s much easier to just pick up the phone and call.  I wish I could have an automatic text reply to people who text me, but like I said, I have to pay for every. single. text.  This may make me sound old and out of the technology loop, but I just don’t get it.

I love when I find someone who feels the same way that I do. I have had to tell my family not to text me because I also have to pay for it every time.

I have been having a conversation with someone when they will get a text and sit there and answer it before continuing to talk to me. I think that is just as bad as interrupting and it’s rude.

    Yeah for no texting.

OK, I’m with you on the texting thing! Not only is it rude but the youth of today are unable to approach a person face to face… like to ask where the restroom is, or can you help me. I know that at the MTC they have to have classes on “detoxing” the missionaries from cell phones and teach them to talk and be friendly to people they don’t know!

This is AMAZING. I thought I was the only one without a texting plan out there. Seriously. I am the only one out of my friend who doesn’t and have been told several times that I live in the stone age. One friend texted another one with a message to give to me since we were hanging out that day…”Can you tell Brandy to call me. I can’t text her since she is in the stone age..”….UM, I have a PHONE! AND E-MAIL! I got satisfaction knowing that when her phone was stolen and she realized that her entire life was on it…and my life was securely documented on my fridge calendar…that my way wasn’t totally ancient, lol. She missed appointments because her phone wasn’t there to remind her to go to them.

There have been several fatal accidents recently…this past week…because of texting. I am happy with my pre-paid ghetto cell phone that costs me $7/month to use in emergencies.

    You guys are refreshing :)

Oh, and kids text eachother at youth dances. This is why teens are even more awkward around the opposite sex these days. It’s crazy. I saw it when I was chaperoning.

Getting off of my soap box now.

THIS is why we’re such good friends, my BFF. We are so alike!!!!!!!!!!!

PS:: I got texting on my phone just last month. I still never use it but at least I don’t have to pay every time people text me (even though I’ve told them a million times that I don’t have texting on my phone!)

Wow! There are still quite a few people out there who feel the same way I do. And of course, Kiersten, since your plan is my plan, we have to pay for all texts. The thing that irks me most is when I get junk texts–like the two I’ve received recently telling me to log on to some web site so I can claim my $$$$. There ought to be a law against junk texting. I’m even on the “do not call” list. I guess we need a “do not text” list.

Yeah, I’m with you. I feel like it’s a younger generation thing, that we don’t really understand. Kind of like how I would wear booty shorts with a sweatshirt in middle school! I am also a pay by text person, so I don’t do it too often. I recently got a phone with a keyboard though and that certainly does make it easier to text, but that doesn’t mean I do it.

  10. Okay, okay. I get it. Texting is bad on so many levels. But I have to say that I think it has its place in the world. For example, I am a grad student. I spend all day in class and meetings, and in library’s studying. But I still need to coordinate with my husband about stuff so that our kids don’t get forgotten about. I feel today about texting the way I felt five years ago about cell phones. It is really annoying when people misuse the technology, but for me it is a really useful tool! Too bad there are so many idiots out there!

Years ago, when brad and i got separate phones, he would text me all the time and it was so annoying. Then I got a phone with full keyboard and it became much easier. To be honest, 99% of my texts are to and from my husband. It is sooooooo way better than actually calling because 1) I HATE the phone, seriously, it’s genetic, my mom hates it too. 2)I have 3 kids and I never have the time to talk on the phone especially when one or all is whining, screaming, etc. I have to strategically plan phone calls when kids are asleep/at school and so it severely limits the times I am able to call.
Finally, I agree with you on how ppl should not text you unless they know that you have a text plan. I never text someone unless I have gotten a text from them already or they have told me to text them. Honestly though, I probably use 10 text messages a month. But Brad uses it ALL the time for biz. His clients actually like to text him, even his 75 year old client. They feel like they aren’t encroaching on his time, so trust me, there are PLENTY of good scenarios to text, but I doubt those same scenarios exist for teens, those kids are just obsessed.

    Seriously. Amen. Preach on sister.
    I cannot stand it.
I think it needs to go away.
    I refuse to participate.
    Texting is ridiculous.

    the end.

  13. Marisa says:

Sorry lady, I’m the total opposite! I love texting. I won’t send a text to someone unless I know they have texting capabilities and a plan, but it’s a lifesaver for me. When I’m at work or in a meeting, it’s so much easier to be able to text someone really quickly rather than try to find the time to call them. I’d much rather text or email someone than talk to them on the phone. I’m weird that way! If my family or friends want to get a hold of me, they know that I’ll respond quicker to a text than I would the phone!

What ever happened to putting a stamp on letter and mailing it? :) I was actually surprised by the many comments of people who do not like texting. I personally don’t like it as a way of conversation but I am all about efficiency. Sometimes it works better than a phone call or e-mail for certain things. Because I have a full keyboard I also text in full sentences with punctuation; that fancy short-hand typing is too hard for me.

By the way, if you have an iPhone with a data plan you can get a free texting plan but it gives you a new phone number. It is through a separate company and they provide the app.
