Couponing
Posted on Sunday, February 28th, 2010 at 9:38 pmLast week I went to a Relief Society activity where they talked about couponing. A couple of women were there to show us some of the tricks of the trade. I’m definitely a bargain shopper. I get really excited when I find really good deals. For this reason, I can see myself getting really excited about saving a lot of money by couponing, but I won’t do it. Sure, I use coupons when I can find one for something I usually buy, but I don’t go out of my way to find coupons or deals on everything I go grocery shopping for every week. And I’m not willing to buy 20 jars of peanut butter just to get $10 back. This new-to-me idea of couponing also seems WAY too time consuming! I can’t imagine trying to sort through all of those coupons, as well as taking so much time at the store, just so I could save a few bucks. And the multiple transactions? It reminds me of being on WIC and I would rather not go back there. I was finished with that when Taylor got a real job. So in case you were wondering, I won’t be clipping an outrageous amount of coupons any time soon. And I won’t be taking pictures of the 20 jars of peanut butter I just bought for 50 cents.
A.MEN Sistah Friend! I’ve tried that route and it is NOT worth it. I follow a lot of blogs of women obsessed with couponing. They swear it’s not time consuming, but to me, it totally is. And when am I going to do multiple transactions with my two kids who are too cranky to make it through one most of the time? And the other thing – most of those products you can score good deals with are not all that healthy, and I wouldn’t ever buy them for my family to begin with, let alone need 40 boxes. I do clip coupons each week, and look for the deals, but only ONE copy of the newspaper and only ONE trip through the store… as quickly as possible!
ha, love how point blank you are. honestly, I feel the same way… which is blasphemous to the couponing pros. there’s a place for it— but where is that comfortable middle road? i’m nervous bc we’ll be needing to tighten– a lot– our budget belt come June, but I’m just not up to the games. couponing looks both attractive and like a massive pain. guess we’ll see what works!
Hahahahaha. I did couponing with couponmom.com at two different times in my life. I never did a multiple transaction (like WIC, I know exactly what you’re talking about!) I didn’t spend a lot more time than normal at the store. I had my limits. It worked out pretty well, but for me it was not worth it.
I don’t need to buy things at a really good deal if it’s not something I would buy normally. Untill I can start getting coupons for broccoli, I’m out. I found a produce market nearby, and watch the manager’s specials for my meats. And I don’t spend much more now on our healthy-but-sensible meals than I did on our strange-and-processed meals. So what if I’m not getting free toothpaste, when it’s on sale it’s not that expensive anyway.
After going to that class I bought a little thing to keep my coupons organized, because that is helpful. However, I’m not going to go crazy with it. I’m fine with just clipping the coupons that I get in the mail and not going out of my way to find them. I agree with the lady above who said that many of the items you find on coupons are unhealthy anyway. I’m good with saving, just not being totally crazy with it!
Funny, we just had the same type RS meeting a couple months ago and while I was pretty impressed at the moms who never had to pay for diapers or toothpaste I have never even really been a bargain shopper…I also don’t like being “that one” that holds up the checkout line. I laughed when I visited the crazy coupon lady website…At the top it says “Pick another checkout line, honey!”
ME 2!!!! And it is actually kind of a pet peeve of mine – good to know I’m not alone!
